Is it Rude to Not Share Food?

From time to time, we are in the position of eating food in front of others. And, sometimes, those people ask us to share food.

Other times, they look at us with big puppy dog eyes and you can almost see the drool dribbling from the mouth… and you know: they want some of your food.

But, is it rude to not share food? Read on below and learn the answer!

Is it Rude to Not Share Food?

Not sharing your food is no crime, especially at school, work, or in some public place. Further, there is absolutely nothing wrong with declining to share your food with a complete stranger.

That said, we are speaking from personal opinion here, not from a religious standpoint. If you are part of a religion, it may dictate that you need to share food with those who ask for it.

Generally speaking, however, it is not rude to not share your food.

How Rude Is it?

On a scale of 1 to 10, not sharing food rates 3 on the rude meter. Our rating is based on the scenario in which a random person or stranger asks you to share your food.

If, for example, it is your five-year-old son who asks you to share your food, and you decline, it would rate 10 (unless it was for health-related reasons).

Why is it Rude?

It is rude to decline your children, close friends, or family food if they would share their food with you. It is not rude, however, in general, to not share food with people.

Why is it Not Rude?

It is not rude to not share your food with most people, in most circumstances. To be honest, food is a basic necessity, and you are not responsible for feeding people.

Hence, unless it is someone you are responsible or closely tied to (or love), you have no legal obligation to share your food with them.

Other Options to Do Instead

You could always offer to pay for someone’s food, or simply buy some extra food and share it. Aside from that, you can avoid eating in front of other people altogether.

That means you should eat before or after meeting up with other people rather than when you are with them.

Common Questions

Is it ok to not share your food?

It is perfectly fine to share your food, it is also absolutely fine to not share it. The fact of the matter it is; it is your food to do with as you see fit. And most likely, you see fit to eat it, period. Whether you share or not does not make you rude, or polite.

Do people think you’re rude when you eat in front of them?

Some people think it is rude when you eat in front of them, normally because they wouldn’t eat in front of others themselves. Likewise, some people get upset about you eating in front of them because they are hungry and secretly want some of your food.

Shouldn’t you share food?

You should share food with those who are close to you and who you have a good relationship with, like relatives, in-laws, and close friends. Otherwise, you really shouldn’t share food with random people and strangers. Rather, buy them some food so you don’t share germs.
