Is it Rude to Do Laundry at Night?

Laundry is one of those little house chores that seem to get bigger and bigger the longer we put it off. That said, sometimes the only free time we can manage to find for our laundry is at night.

But, is it rude to do laundry at night? Read on below and find out!

Is it Rude to Do Laundry at Night?

If you live in an apartment building, or in a house that is close enough for your neighbors to hear your washer and drier when they are running, it may be considered rude to do laundry at night.

Likewise, it is rude to run the washing machine or drier at night if you have others living in your home that is trying to sleep (such as adults with jobs, children who attend school, and babies).

The exception is if your washer and drier are very quiet when they are operating. But, they must be practically silent.

How Rude Is it?

Doing laundry at night rates 8 out of 10 on the rude meter. People have jobs, children, and babies that are trying to sleep at night. However, if you live in a house with no neighbors (or neighbors far away enough to not hear your washer or drier), there is nothing rude about it unless you have family members that are trying to sleep.

Even more, sometimes you just can’t avoid doing some laundry at night (such as when you need a work uniform clean and you forgot until right before bedtime).

Why is it Rude?

Doing laundry at night is rude because it keeps people awake when they would otherwise be sleeping. When you do laundry at night, depending on your living situation, you have to take into account not only those in your own home but your neighbors too.

For example, doing laundry at night in an apartment building that doesn’t have a laundry room (preferably in the basement), is very rude because there is a higher likelihood that you are directly going to be the reason someone misses out on sleep.

Other Options to Do Instead

Sticking to a rigorous laundry schedule may be your best option if you find yourself tempted to do laundry at night. If you are following a regular routine, you should have no problem getting your laundry done during the late mornings, afternoons, and evenings, throughout the week.

Is it ok to do laundry late at night?

If you live alone, in a house that sits far enough away that neighbors can’t hear your washing machine and drier running, it’s ok to do laundry at night. Otherwise, in almost any other case, it is not ok to do laundry late at night.
