Is it Rude To Ask for a Birthday Present?

Our birthday rolls around once a year, and it is one of the most special days (to us)… even if others aren’t as ecstatic about it as we are.

That said after we grow up, too many it becomes just another day… while others still expect a card, money, or present from their friends, family, and loved ones.

But, is it rude to ask for a birthday present? Read on below and find out!

Is it Rude to Ask for a Birthday Present?

Depending on who you are asking, it is rude as heck to ask for a birthday present unless you are a child.

Once most people hit puberty and begin to mature, they understand that those who love you enough and can afford to will buy you a birthday present.

Asking anyone else, or in general, is immature and often seen as rude (as heck).

How Rude Is it?

Asking for a birthday present rates 5 out of 10 on the rude meter. If you have to ask someone about a present, you probably shouldn’t be asking them in the first place.

In other words, it is rude to ask people for gifts. If someone wants to give you a present for your birthday and has the money to do so, they will do just that.

Why is it Rude?

Asking someone to give you a gift is pretty rude, for a few reasons; you don’t know how much money they have, you don’t know how they feel about you, it’s not nice to put people on the spot, being a few of the most significant ones.

Other Options to Do Instead

If you aren’t a kid or dating someone, you probably shouldn’t even be thinking about asking them for a birthday present.

That said, here are a few other options to do instead:

  • Continuously drop hints about your birthday and what you would like for weeks beforehand
  • Buy the person you want a gift from a gift, and tell them it is a late or early birthday gift (then tell them when your birthday is)

Common Questions

Is it rude to ask for gifts?

Generally speaking, it is neither rude nor polite to ask for gifts. Whether or not asking for a gift is rude depends on the person you are asking, your relationship with them, the occasion, and more. Just remember, if you ask someone for a gift (for whatever occasion), you should be prepared to do the same for them when the time comes.

Should you ask for something on your birthday?

There is nothing wrong with asking your loved ones for someone on your birthday if you know they want to get you something. But, you should ask every friend, co-worker, and neighbor you can think of for a birthday present (unless you also get them birthday presents as well).

What is the rule for birthday gifts?

There is no rule for birthday gifts. Either you get one for someone or you don’t. That said, if you are related, are married or dating, or otherwise are closely intertwined, giving a birthday gift may be expected of you.
